New HKUST President Prof. Nancy IP Responds to Policy Address

As the first female president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and among Hong Kong’s eight universities subsidized by the University Grants Committee, Prof. Nancy IP took office today.  She welcomes and expresses gratitude to the series of measures rolled out by the Chief Executive Mr. John LEE in his maiden Policy Address on promoting education, innovation and technology as well as attracting talent, saying it is a fresh booster to Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub.

President Ip said, “Talent is key to propelling innovation. We are pleased to see that the government has proposed different measures to proactively recruit talent, ranging from increasing the number of UGC-funded research postgraduate places to recruiting graduates from the world's top 100 universities and the Greater Bay Area campuses of local universities to work in Hong Kong.  Hong Kong also has five world’s top 100 universities including HKUST.  We will work with our newly-opened HKUST(Guangzhou) to nurture more high-calibre talent, so as to inject new impetus into Hong Kong’s development.”

President Ip added, “The policy address also offered a holistic thinking on promoting Hong Kong’s advancement in innovation and technology, with a whole variety of enhanced measures and additional funding commissioned to address different aspects spanning land, resources, talent, infrastructure and intellectual property.  Meanwhile, the government proposed to attract high-quality enterprises from areas including life and health technology, artificial intelligence, data science, advanced manufacturing and new energy technology – also key research focuses of HKUST, to Hong Kong.  Such measures will not only energize the local I&T ecosystem, but also bring about enormous investments and jobs, as well as collaboration opportunities between academia and the industries. HKUST emphasizes both basic and applied science, and has always been dedicated to the transformation of research findings to applicable solutions. We will also encourage our students and faculty to actively participate in the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus Scheme.”
